Experiment 7.2: Using garbage enzymes as a pesticide

Aim:

To find out the feasibility of garbage enzymes as a pesticide.

Approach:

By diluting garbage enzymes with water and spraying the solution onto an ant-infested area, we will be able to find out the effectiveness of garbage enzymes as a pesticide. Then, compare the results with a pesticide.

Hypothesis:

Garbage enzymes will be effective as a pesticide.

Apparatus and Materials List:

1. Water x100ml

2. Garbage enzymes x1ml

3. Spray bottle (capacity of 150ml)

4. Ant-infested area

5. Pesticide

Experimental Procedures:

1. Dilute 1ml of garbage enzymes with 100ml of water.

2. Pour the solution into the spray bottle.

3. Estimate the number of ants in the ant-infested area.

4. Spray the solution onto the ant-infested area.

5. Wait for 15 minutes and observe the results.

6. Record the results on a table.

7. Repeat the experiment from steps 1-6 in another location.

8. Repeat the experiment from steps 1-7 but use a pesticide instead of garbage enzymes diluted with water.

Observations:

The number of ants decreased significantly after the garbage enzymes diluted with water was sprayed on the ant-infested area.

The difference in the number of ants before and after the garbage enzymes are sprayed is slightly more than when the pesticide is sprayed.

Experimental errors:

The number of ants counted might not be exact as it is just an estimate.

Methods to improve experiment to obtain accuracy and reliability:
1. This experiment can be tested at different pest-infested locations and the results can then be averaged out to increase its accuracy.

2. After the substance is sprayed, the number of ants found in the area can be counted after 24 hours. This is to see the lasting effects of the pesticide and the garbage enzymes on the number of ants.
